The City of Port Washington is close to finalizing a deal that will create a whole new neighborhood on the banks of Lake Michigan.

It's a nearly $60 million investment just south of the We Energies power plant.

Town houses, apartments, and single family homes would anchor the Prairie's Edge development.

Port Washington Mayor Tom Mlada says the developer will pay market value for the city-owned property, and Port Washington will cover costs for public improvements that preserve lakefront access for everyone.

"When I was first elected, one of the things I heard a lot from people was that Port Washington is really a hidden little gem," Mlada said. "That was one of the things, that moniker, that we wanted to remove. We wanted people to discover Port Washington."

The developer is expected to break ground on the first phase of construction next year.
