MOUNT PLEASANT -- Mystery surrounds why a 17-year-old girl was found dead on the side of the road in Mount Pleasant.

Olivia Mackay was reported missing Sunday. The Kenosha girl's family had been desperately searching for her. She was last seen alive on Sunday.

The Indian Trail High School student's body was found in a ditch on Louis Sorenson road in Mount Pleasant Monday.

TODAY'S TMJ4's Chopper4 captured investigators tirelessly searching the area where Mackay's body was found, abandoned on the side of the road.

Captain Brian Smith with the Mount Pleasant Police said authorities cannot rule out murder at this time.

"Well, there's that potential certainly," Smith said. He added he wants to know, "How did she get there, who brought her there, is there a vehicle around, all of those questions need to be answered."

People are also questioning why an Amber Alert was not issued. We are told by Captain Smith at onset, investigators did not believe her disappearance was suspicious.

A spokeswoman with Kenosha Unified School District also released a statement after learning of 17-year-old Olivia Mackay's death:

Due to the sensitive nature of this incident, Kenosha Unified will have counselors on hand for students who may need additional support on both Thursday, July 27, and Friday, July 28, from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Indian Trail High School and Academy, 6800 60th St.
