MILWAUKEE — Just a few hundred feet from a memorial dedicated to a 6-year-old killed while crossing the street police responded to another reckless driving crash.
Milwaukee Police said a green pick up truck sped down Center Street and blew through a red light at 20th. They slammed into a parked car so hard that it caused a chain reaction. The impact pushed a parked SUV across the street which then hit its owner who was standing outside the car.
The man is expected to be okay. The driver who ignored the red light was taken into custody.
"It don't sound like no surprise to me," said Khufu Khafre.
Khafre has two young sons and lives in the neighborhood. He said scenes like this are common.
"If it's finna be a yellow light man slow down," said Khafre.
Last night, home security video showed what appears to be another driver crashing and spinning out after ignoring a red light near Sherman and Townsend.
Police said it was a hit and run.
Reckless driving is a plague city and county leaders are trying to get a handle on.
Recently, a task force released a draft of recommendations. They include redesigning roads to discourage speeding and holding victim impact panels, in hopes it'll have a rehabilitating effect on reckless drivers.
However, people we talked with believe change has to come from the drivers themselves.
