Man dead after shooting outside Madison City-County Building

This is the city of Madison's first homicide of 2022.

MADISON, Wisc. — The Madison Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened near the City-County Building on Wednesday.

Police say one person was shot and taken to the hospital. The victim, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Multiple rounds were fired around 5:10 p.m. outside the Dane County Jail along the 200 block of S. Carroll St near West Doty Street.

Several officers in the area heard the gunshots and an officer provided aid to the victim immediately after the shooting.

Several people witnessed the shooting and detectives are gathering statements, according to Madison police.

Multiple persons of interest are in custody and are being interviewed by detectives.

Madison police say numerous city employees were inside the City-County Building at the time of the shooting. They were notified of the incident and police are increasing patrols in the area.

This is the city of Madison's first homicide of 2022.
