MILWAUKEE -- Za'layia Jenkins, the nine-year-old struck and killed by a stray bullet while inside a home this past May, is being honored with a community garden.
Family and friends gathered for a groundbreaking of the garden Saturday, which will fill a vacant lot across the street from the house where Za'layia was killed near 15th and Meinecke.
"I heard about Za'layia on the news and I thought it was just really terrible that so much keeps happening in the city of Milwaukee and to our kids," Cindy Hudson said. "This is just a family that wants some peace in the neighborhood, so I thought this was a good idea to come out and help build a garden."
The garden is a volunteer effort.
So far, no one has been arrested for Za'layia's death.
