Republicans and House Speaker Paul Ryan are ramping up efforts to end Obamacare. President-elect Donald Trump is promising "insurance for everybody."
?
Speaker Ryan spoke with TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson about why he thinks a President Trump will get the job done.
?
Benson: Do you think he will be a president for everyone?
Speaker Ryan: I really believe he aspires to do just that, to be a president for everyone.
?
President-elect Trump has suggested Congress better not get cold feet on moving fast to replace the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.
?
Trump offered no details, except to say his plan will be simpler and less expensive.
Speaker Ryan: We have to repeal this law and replace it with one where everyone can get access to affordable coverage.
Benson: Replace it by when?
Speaker Ryan: The legislation, we want to have all done within first 100 days.
?
The Speaker promises the more 200,000 people in Wisconsin who sign up for Obamacare this year will not have the rug pulled out from under them.
?
There's no date yet on when a new plan will be up and running, but Ryan says it will mean less government and more insurance choices.
?
"We want people to be in charge of their healthcare, not government running their healthcare," said Ryan.
?
Wisconsin Democrats disagree.
"Instead of a full repeal, without any plan to replace the law, Speaker Ryan should work across the aisle to strengthen and improve President Obama's healthcare reform legislation," said Brandon Weathersby with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
?
Ryan says he's looking forward to Friday when Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.
?
"I'm going to be excited about getting back to work, to go solve the big problems that Americans are tired of being tired about," said Ryan. That's what I think we are going to be focused on and I think that's what Donald Trump offers."
?
Speaker Ryan also spoke with Benson about the controversial comments made by Democratic Congressman John Lewis about President-elect Trump.
?
Ryan calls Lewis a close friend, but says the civil rights icon was wrong to say President-elect Trump was not a "legitimate president."
?
"I adore this man. He's an icon," said Ryan. "But I do think he's wrong to say this is an illegitimate presidency. I don't think that kind of rhetoric brings the country together. I don't think that's the kind of healing we need in this country. Donald Trump won this election fair and square, clearly and convincingly. "
