Police believe high speed and alcohol were factors in a crash that killed one person in West Allis early Thursday morning.
An SUV and a car were involved in the crash shortly after 1:30 a.m., prompting authorities to close W. Greenfield Avenue between 96th and 98th streets for several hours.
According to the West Allis Police Department, a vehicle was traveling west on W. Greenfield Ave. and struck a vehicle turning north at the intersection with S. 98th Street.
Police say the driver of the car that hit the other vehicle tried to run away but was taken into custody after a short chase. Another passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries.
Officers found open alcohol containers and two Powerball tickets in the striking vehicle's car, according to documents from the Medical Examiner's office.
The lone occupant of the vehicle that was struck, a 50-year-old man from Menomonee Falls, died in the crash.
