One person has died and one is in critical condition after an Ironman race in Madison Sunday.

Both participants were found unresponsive during the swim portion of the race, according to WISC-TV.

Paramedics pulled both athletes to the shore and performed CPR before transporting them to local hospitals where one passed away. That person did have a underlying condition, according to the Madison Fire Department.

The other participant is continuing to receive treatment.

Deaths are not uncommon in triathletes, according to a Minnesota study that surveyed 9 million athletes. The study found sudden death, cardiac arrests and trauma-related death affected 135 of those surveyed. According to the study, most sudden deaths occur during the swimming portion of the triathlon.
