West Allis police say one person is in custody after shots were fired near a home near 54th and Hayes Saturday morning.

After police responded, the suspect initially refused to come out of the residence, so police cordoned the area off.

The suspect did eventually come out and was taken into custody.

Police say there’s no danger to the public, but authorities will be on the scene for some time to continue their investigation.

Kyle Schram says he and his wife just moved to the area three months ago and woke up to gunshots.

"We saw the police across the street, the SWAT team, then we saw them down in our yard with assault rifles so yeah it was definitely an experience,” he said.

Others are shocked a situation like this happened, but they’re grateful no police or innocent people were injured.

"I've never heard of anything happening here like that before,” said Jennifer McNeil.

Police say the suspect has been arrested a number of times prior to this incident.
