MADISON — The Madison Fire Department is responding to a large fire at an electric substation just east of the state capitol, according to officials.

Video from the scene shows thick clouds of smoke originating from a building near the intersection of E. Washington and Blair streets. Police are requesting that people avoid the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started at a Madison Gas & Electric substation.
Thousands are currently without power, according to the Madison Gas & Electric outage map. Report an outage here.
