The planned construction of a new IKEA store in Oak Creek is moving along quickly and on schedule, the city's director of community development said Thursday.

The proposed 290,000-square-foot store, which will sit along I-94 just north of Drexel Avenue, is expected to bring 250 jobs to the area.

.It'll be the first IKEA in Wisconsin.

Director of Community Development Doug Seymour said construction crews are currently building the road, officially named IKEA Way, that will link the store to Drexel Avenue.

He said the store has obtained all necessary permits from the city.

The road is expected to be finished in July, meaning ground should be broken on the project soon afterwards.

This week, Oak Creek's Planning Commission looked over preliminary renderings of the development and approved a slight  change to the plans.

"They needed to adjust the site plan, to move the building 50 feet to the West, to accommodate some changes  to the wetland preservation plan," Seymour said.

If construction stays on schedule, the store is expected to open to customers in the summer of 2018.
