Nine feet underground, walk into Milwaukee's first golf tavern.

“When you come to Nine Below, you can do something you can't do anywhere else,” said Nine Below Co-Owner David Poytinger.

You can build and play your very own mini-golf course.

“There is nothing like it,’ he said. “My wife and I literally came up with this idea ourselves.”

There are green platforms that have trap doors and several holes with the addition of obstacles that you choose.

“That's really the big thing about Nine Below are all the obstacles,” Poytinger said. “So they'll grab obstacles from the ‘Obstacle Garden’ and they'll start putting those different obstacles on their course to really liven it up a little bit and make it more challenging for the players.”

“Everyone just rushes in to try to get the best characters and things, which is really fun because they just have all this weird stuff,” explained Mckenzie Richardson of the experience.

That stuff is a way for you to customize your course, along with bumpers that outline it.

Once you design it, you test it and then play it along with eight other holes that different teams design.

“The possibilities are endless,” Poytinger said. “It's pretty much as creative as you want it to be.”

“It's nice because it's mini golf but you also get to make it yourself so you can challenge yourselves and think in different ways, which is so different and easy,” Richardson described. “Like an easy way to do something fun.”

Start playing, and it may not be as easy but it's always a good time.

“It will be your escape from reality no matter what month that you come in and decide to do it,” Poytinger said of his year-round business.

Nine Below has been open for about six months on Milwaukee’s East Side. To play, you need to make a reservation. Nine Below also hosts corporate events.
