MILWAUKEE — 146,400 chinook salmon were poured into the Milwaukee river last week as a part of a yearly stocking event.

The purpose of this event is to enhance fishing opportunities for anglers in the area.

In Wisconsin, stocking is only done in Lake Michigan due to the fact that chinook salmon need specific food and habitat requirements that can only be met by the waters of Lake Michigan.

However, chinook salmon are not the only type of fish that the Wisconsin DNR will stock this year. They are also looking to stock coho salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout into Lake Michigan.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, majority of the stocked fish are not impacted by the practices the DNR uses.

"The vast majority of fish stocked throughout the state are transported from hatcheries to the stocking locations using stocking trucks and into the water using stocking tubes like those shown on the video," said the DNR.
