Milwaukee's annual celebration of Mexican heritage has been canceled over coronavirus concerns, organizers announced Friday.

Mexican Fiesta was originally scheduled to take place August 21, 22 and 23 at Henry Maier Festival Park on Milwaukee's lakefront.

"The WHSF’s board has come to the very hard decision to cancel Mexican Fiesta 2020. Due to COVID-19 and the ongoing state of our country, we felt that the responsibility of keeping our community, volunteers, and coordinators safe was our top priority," said Executive Director Teresa C. Mercado.

The original festival started in 1973 as a celebration of the Mexican Independence Day. A south side street in Milwaukee County was closed to traffic to celebrate the Mexican community.
