Deputies discovered two young children alone in a Milwaukee residence infested with mice, rats, cockroaches, and bedbugs Monday, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said two young children ages three and eight were living along in the infested residence wearing only t-shirts. The release noted the home had a strong odor of feces.

Deputies found the children while attempting to serve court documents at the residence. Child Protective Services were notified and a neighbor fed the children while officials tried to track down their parents.

The mother arrived later in the afternoon and told officers her four older children were in school and she left the younger children alone to run errands for a few hours.

Child Protective Services took the children and contacted the schools about the older ones to have them picked up from school. A housing inspector was called to assess the living conditions in the house.

The case has been turned over to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office for possible charges of child neglect.
