MILWAUKEE-- A 25-year-old Milwaukee man remains in the hospital with serious injuries after a fight with an off-duty police officer. Police said that the incident happened near Jackson Park early Sunday morning.

Authorities said that they were called to investigate a battery complaint about 7:40 a.m. Sunday involving an off-duty Milwaukee police officer near the intersection of 45th & Cleveland. The officer was arrested on April 19, according to online jail records.

When first paramedics arrived on scene, they found a man unresponsive with serious injuries. The victim was taken to a local hospital, authorities said.

The off-duty officer wasn’t hurt. He’s a 32-year-old man with 13 years on the job.

Bridgette Schulz lives a few doors down from where it happened. When she woke up, she was surprised to look out her window and see her neighborhood blocked off by crime tape with police squads lining the street.

“This is a very quiet area. You don’t see all of this police activity,” Schulz said. “Before we knew it the command post, RV pulled up and the chief was here.”

Schulz is frustrated by what happened, especially as the state remains under the “Safer at Home” order.

“We’re trying our best to prevent this virus from spreading,” Schulz said. “I don’t go anywhere. I don’t take my children outside of the house. We stay home.”

While the details remain unclear, she still feels the police should be leading by example.

“I have respect for our police officers and the last thing we need to hear is an incident where one of our officers are involved in something like this,” Schulz said.

Alderman Mark Borkowski said that this type of incident is very unusual for his district, especially in this part of his area near Jackson Park.

The off-duty involved in the incident is now on administrative duty per protocol while in custody.

Charges are expected to be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
