Milwaukee has been named one of the 50 best cities in America to live in, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Milwaukee, which ranked no. 72 on the list in 2016, has jumped up to no. 47 in this year’s rankings.
“Millennials are drawn to Milwaukee's blue-collar roots, relatively low cost of living and exciting, new development,” the report says.
Factors like quality of life and the job market in each city were used to develop the rankings.
U.S. News & World Report statistics indicate housing costs in Milwaukee this year are below the national average, while its unemployment rate sits at 4.6 percent.
“There’s something special going on in Milwaukee,” said Mayor Tom Barrett.
Barrett said he was excited about the national recognition.
“Austin, Texas and Denver, Colorado both did very will in this year’s rankings. They’re considered hot cities, and we’re moving in that direction also,” the mayor said.
Barrett said development downtown is driving Milwaukee’s resurgence.
“Historical architecture stands as a tribute to Milwaukee's past, while the metro area vibrates from the construction of a changing skyline and with the energy of its near 600,000 residents,” the U.S. News & World Report article reads. “Cranes, which have become common fixtures on the skyline, are a picture of Milwaukee's modernization.”
Barrett said making sure all areas of the city feel the impact of that growth remains a high priority.
“We have to make sure there are jobs throughout the entire city,” Barrett said. “The heart’s doing well. We have to make sure the rest of the body is doing well also.”
“I want this to apply to the entire city, and that’s why we’ve taken a city-wide approach with investing in libraries around the city, making sure we’ve got playgrounds all around the city,” he added.
