MILWAUKEE — Byron Artis of Milwaukee was charged with first-degree reckless homicide Thursday after allegedly shooting longtime friend Ruquinn McCullar on Feb. 1 at a gas station in the 2600 block of West Lisbon.

McCullar was shown on surveillance video walking toward a van that was parked at one of the gas pumps.

After opening the driver’s door of the van, McCullar was shot by someone inside the van, according to the complaint. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, according to the complaint.

On Feb. 2, Artis reportedly walked into the District 7 police station and said he needed to turn himself in, according to the criminal complaint.

“I guess I’m wanted for a shooting that happened at North 27th Street and West Lisbon Avenue. A friend told me to turn myself in. I think I might need a lawyer,” Artis said, according to the complaint.

He was taken into custody.

Two years ago, a worker at the same BP gas station was beaten to death by a person in the store.
