Milwaukee drum group gives back beyond Summerfest

Summerfest is full of sights and sounds, but the Nei Phi Neph group is making noise with their drums and their actions.

"It changed my life," said Trevon Martin, a drummer in the group.

Martin said he didn't grow up with the perfect home life, but in the Fall, he's off to college.

"My way of giving back is going to get my education and coming back and giving back to the youth," he said.

It's the mentality leader Anthony Hibbler and his mother drum into the kids they work with, starting at home.

"This program started as a way to keep my nieces and nephews out of trouble," said Hibbler.

Now, the group includes more than 20 Milwaukee children, and they aren't just drumming.

"We do neighborhood clean-ups, we do join other people's efforts to do clean-ups, and block parties and things to keep kids off the street," explained Hibbler.

Hibbler and his mother want to give kids a sense of community and ownership in a city that has so much violence and bad behavior.

The kids love the fun, and it's keeping them well- occupied.

"If I didn't, I wouldn't have nothing to do," said one young drummer.

The program operates almost entirely on community donations, so if you see them, they ask you to consider dropping a dollar in their bucket.
