Milwaukee County deputy pursues reckless driver for 5 miles, driver crashes into tree near UWM

MILWAUKEE — While on a security patrol just after 2 a.m. in the area of N. 8th Street and W. North Ave., a Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputy saw a driver of an SUV drive over the median and hit a road sign.

After initiating a traffic stop, the driver of the SUV fled and from the deputy on to northbound I-43 at North Ave. The chase reached speeds of 100 mph as the driver exited eastbound on Capitol Drive and continued through Shorewood.

After a chase that lasted more than five miles, the SUV crashed into a tree at Lake Dr and Hampshire Dr. near UW-Milwaukee. The driver fled the vehicle running westbound through neighboring yards and remains at large.

Three passengers in the vehicle were taken to the hospital and released. The three were identified and determined to have no warrants for their arrest.

The investigation recovered a handgun and a large sum of money in the car.
