HALES CORNERS -- "Milwaukee County's Living Museum," the Boerner Botanical Gardens, will be free to Milwaukee County residents with proof of residency on four dates this summer.

The "First Tuesdays at the Gardens" program will run from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on June 7, July 5, August 2, and September 6. The special days are limited to Milwaukee County residents only.

The gardens are renowned as a horticultural showplace, with over 600 acres of plants, trees, and shrubs on display, Milwaukee County Parks says. It's a short drive away from Milwaukee, located at 9400 Boerner Dr. in Hales Corners.

The land for the Boerner Botanical Gardens was purchased from 1929-30, and built by Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration workers during the Great Depression.

There are lots of spaces to explore at the "gem of the park system," including a bog walk, daylily path, herb garden, peony garden, rock garden, rose garden, shrub mall, and more.
