MILWAUKEE -- Thursday is the deadline for Milwaukee Public Schools to give their decision regarding the "takeover" proposal for struggling schools.

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele appointed Mequon-Thiensville Superintendent Demond Means to oversee control of one "yet-to-be-revealed" underperforming MPS school this fall, with more schools to follow in the future.

On Monday, protestors circled the Milwaukee County Courthouse.

"Change is sometimes not good," one speaker said. "In this case, it's not good at all, so you better put on your boots and you better get rocking because we're not moving."

Abele said he is required to enforce state law.

"They are definitely taking our voice from us," another speaker said. "They are definitely taking our rights from us as well and we are not going to stand for it. I feel that not one school should be taken over."

If the proposal is denied, the state legislature still has the power to enforce that law.
