WAUKESHA COUNTY -- A man died on I-94 westbound Tuesday night after he left a disabled vehicle and was hit by another car.
It happened just after 9 p.m. in the City of Pewaukee.
Waukesha County Sheriff's Deputies say the car was experiencing mechanical issues and pulled over near the center median.
A passenger in the car then tried to walk across the freeway but was hit by another vehicle.
The accident forced Sheriff’s Deputies to shut down the freeway for 5 hours while they investigated the crash.
Captain Timothy Carnahan with the Wisconsin State Patrol said during a roadside emergency on the highway, stay in the vehicle.
"That vehicle is a protective medal cage. It's designed to take impact. It's your safest spot along the roadway," said Carnahan.
He adds:
- Stop on the side of a highway only if it's the last resort
- Don't get out of the car, remain inside the vehicle with the seat belt buckled
- Pull over to the right side of the road if possible
- Don't perform repairs on your car. Call for assistance.
- Turn on hazards and pop the hood
