MILWAUKEE — A 23-year-old Milwaukee man has died after being shot by Milwaukee police following a police pursuit Sunday night.

Officers attempted to pull over a vehicle for reckless driving after 8 p.m. They say the driver took off around the block and briefly pursued before it crashed into a light pole near the intersection of North 47th Street and West Hampton Avenue.

After crashing the vehicle, the man exited the car and fired shots at officers. Three officers fired back.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital. The three officers have nine years, five years and four years of experience respectively. They have been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol, according to police.

Neighbors in the area say they heard the chase and gunfire.

"It was a lot," Ashanti Davis said. "I was kind of scared just because of the kids. A bullet does not have a name on it. It could go in any house."

A block east of the crash, another neighbor said she didn't hear anything but she was still concerned this morning.

"It's just scary," she said. "I'm 63-years-old and I've never seen anything like this in all my life. Got to stay prayed up. I'm wearing my armor now; the blood of Jesus. That's all I can do."

Eastbound traffic on Hampton opened around 10 a.m. Traffic heading westbound between 46th Street and 48th Street is still closed. Milwaukee Police say they'll release more information later in the day.
