A 22-year-old driver has been arrested in a north side crash that killed a Milwaukee mother and her 11-month-old daughter early Monday morning near 35th Street and Capitol Drive.

Milwaukee police said the crash happened around 1:15 a.m. A 22-year-old man drove through a red light and hit the car 27-year-old Shakela Rhodes and her daughter were in.

The fatal crash caused lots of damage sending debris flying. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

It was a terrible day for the Rhodes' family, who was killed in the crash.

“I can’t understand it,” said Brenda Dean, Rhodes' aunt.

As tears rolled down faces, they couldn't believe Rhodes and her daughter Aaliyah Ellis are gone.

“It’s sad, it’s sad," said Marilyn Copeland, another aunt. “I’m asking everyone to please pray for the family, please do.”

“It’s just hard,” Dean said.

Another 14-year-old family member survived the crash, and police said she’s still in the hospital.

“We’re praying now that she comes through this,” Dean said.

Rhodes leaves behind four children and this tragic news is tearing the family apart inside. But they vow to stay strong and take care of the kids of a mother they say was happy, outgoing and outspoken.

“It’s like a shock to everybody, everybody in shock right now,” Dean said. "Throw the key away, he don’t ever need to be out here driving never again in life. He don’t ever need to see daylight.”

This crash is still under investigation.
