MADISON -- An hours-long standoff at a Madison duplex has ended with the suspect taken into custody and treated for an apparent overdose.

Police were called to the residence on the city's east side around 10 a.m. Sunday after someone fired shots.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval told reporters the man's girlfriend and a neighbor had safely left the duplex. Koval said the man has mental health issues and a history with police.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain told the Wisconsin State Journal Sunday evening that the standoff was over and there was no further threat to the neighborhood. He says officers took the 35-year-old man from the home and paramedics were treating him for an apparent overdose. His condition wasn't immediately clear.

Some residents were asked to evacuate during the standoff.
