The owner of Wheel & Sprocket bike stores, Chris Kegel, passed away Tuesday, after a battle with liver cancer.

”Over the last 40 years, Wheel & Sprocket and Chris have changed the cycling community in a positive way," a post on Wheel & Sprocket's Facebook page reads.

The celebration of life for Kegel will be held on Friday at St. Matthias Catholic Church with a reception from 3 - 6:45 p.m., and a presentation to follow at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthias.

“Yesterday Chris Kegel, a man of legendary love and kindness, passed away at his home surrounded by his family,” Kegel’s children Noel, Julian, Amelia and Tessa said in a statement.  “Share with us in joy and sadness as we lift him to the next place. We are certain the world is a better place because he spent time to listen and laugh with us. The whole family is so happy to have shared his life with all of you.”

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, to please make donations to The Chris Kegel Foundation, established to provide a greater access to bicycling, a commitment Kegel held close while he was alive.
