Since 2010, Lake Michigan’s water level has risen more than four feet. The rise can be attributed to the amount of rain that falls on the lake, the amount of runoff that goes into the lake, and how much is evaporating off of the lake.
The high water level has been a huge headache for waterfront owners experiencing ongoing bluff erosion. But the higher water levels are welcomed at the South Shore Yacht Club.
It’s only been a few years since club officials contemplated major reconstruction of their marina when water levels were very low. Instead with the higher water levels, they’ve had to lift the wave and tender dock to their highest levels. Now, yacht club members finds themselves in a sweet spot, and thankfully after a dry winter and spring, the water shouldn’t rise much more.
