A blind dog that nearly died after it was trapped in a van that caught fire is back home.

The car caught fire in a Walmart parking lot in Lake Geneva Wednesday night, and the flames spread to 4 other vehicles.

"At this point, I was in tears watching my car engulfed in flames,"  said Jon Sharkus.  "I could see the smoke rolling through the windows."
Sharkus was inside the Walmart  when he saw the flames near his van.

"That's when the waterworks started for me. There's nothing I can do. I'm just helpless," Sharkus said.  "You could see the flames coming out of the driver side window."

Inside his van was his 16-year-old blind dog Christy.

Lake Geneva Firefighters broke the van's windows and pulled out the lifeless dog. They started CPR and rushed the dog to a nearby animal hospital. Even the veterinarians say they didn't expect Christy to survive, but she did Sharkus said.

Fundraising efforts are underway to help the family pay for Christy's medical bills and to replace the van.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
