KENOSHA, Wis. -- A Kenosha police officer was shot early Saturday morning and the suspect is still at large, according to the Kenosha Police Department.

According to a news release, the 30-year-old officer was investigating an entry to vehicle complaint in the 4600 block of Sheridan Rd. and found someone who matched the description provided by the complaint. That person shot the officer as he "attempted to investigate," police say.

The officer returned fire. Police say they don't know if the suspect was injured.

The suspect was able to get away and has not been located, according to the news release.

The police officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has two years of service with the Kenosha Police Department.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation will handle the investigation, police say.
