MILWAUKEE -- A 35-year-old man died at the Milwaukee County Jail Friday afternoon, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
A correctional officer called medical staff at about 1:45 p.m. Friday for an inmate in distress in the jail's mental health unit. The man was conscious and breathing at that time, the sheriff's office says.
Medical staff called for an ambulance, and began CPR when the man stopped breathing. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded as well, but efforts to save the inmate's life were unsuccessful.
The sheriff's office says the man was brought to the jail on October 17 by South Milwaukee police. An autopsy will be performed soon to determine the exact cause of death.
Waukesha County Sheriff's Department detectives are handling the death investigation, the sheriff's office says.
