MILWAUKEE — An apartment fire near 26th Street and Capitol Drive displaced about 50 people Saturday evening, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department(MFD).

A Milwaukee Fire official said the call came in at 7:12 p.m.

MFD said the fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

The Red Cross was contacted to help displaced residents.

Michelle Vaughns, a neighbor, said she noticed a lot of smoke while sitting in her car.

“I was sitting in my car and had seen a lot of smoke,” Vaughns said. “I smelt it. I was like, is someone’s house on fire?”

Vaughns said she and other neighbors gathered near the scene after noticing the smoke.

"I ran down there and saw some people coming from that direction and asked if I could help," Vaughns recalled.

Milwaukee police and fire officials are investigating the incident.
