Ice Castles attraction in Dells to reopen

Posted
and last updated
An icy spectacle in Wisconsin Dellsthat briefly closed due to warm weather will reopen Saturday.

Ice Castles spokeswoman Melissa Smuzynski told WISC-TV that the winter-weather exhibit was closed Jan. 18 because of warmer-than-usual temperatures last week. The weather caused walking surfaces to become slushy, which would have made for an "unenjoyable experience for guests," Smuzynski said.

The castles will reopen to the public on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The walking surface is composed of 8 inches of crushed ice and snow, organizers said. In warm weather, the surface becomes wet and slushy. The return of colder temperatures allowed the attraction's ice artisans to prepare the walking surface for reopening.

Smuzynski said anyone who purchased tickets to Ice Castles for one of the days the attraction was closed can email info@icecastles.com to reschedule their visit.

The Ice Castles in the Dells are at 2001 Wisconsin Dells Parkway in the parking lot of the Mount Olympus Resort.

Wisconsin’s ice castle is located on the Mount Olympus grounds. It is one of five ice castles across the United States and Canada.

This winter wonderland features twinkling lights, glowing ice, a maze, and ice slide.

"We have hundreds of lights buried inside the ice and all sorts of nooks and crannys to explore. During the day you can see the deep glacial blues in the ice and the fine details, and at night you get to see the glowing lights, site manager Dan Beck said.
