The I-94 eastbound "zipper merge" at the Waukesha/Milwaukee County line is scheduled to be taken down Thanksgiving weekend, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Since March, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has restricted eastbound I-94 traffic from three lanes to two lanes between Sunnyslope Road and Highway 100. The lane reduction has resulted in massive traffic back-ups west of the closure.
The zipper merge was added to help push more traffic through the lane closures, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation told TODAY'S TMJ4 when it was put in place.
The lane closure was part of the Zoo Interchange reconstruction project, which began in 2013. The $1.7 billion project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
