A homeless man has been charged with hitting a Milwaukee County Transit driver.

On Friday, an MCTS driver stopped her bus to let passengers on when Christopher Mathis boarded and tried to pay using metro card. The card was denied and Mathis asked if he could ride for free but the driver said no.

Mathis then punched the partition in front of the driver and then proceeded to reach around the partition, swinging his fists directly at the driver.

The driver told police Mathis struck her in the knee and caused pain.

Once in police custody, Mathis said he punched the driver because he is homeless and needed to go to jail.

Mathis is charged with battery to a public transit operator.
