The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement for Lake Michigan beaches from Sheboygan to Kenosha counties, meaning getting in the water could be life-threatening.

The alert was slated to last from 1 p.m. to midnight. According to the NWS, dangerous waves and strong currents make for a high swim risk.

Despite the threat, people were in the water at McKinley and Atwater beaches in Milwaukee.

Martez Taylor from Memphis, was at McKinley with his family. He said they put their feet in the water, but would leave when things got dangerous.

"It's very serious because I don't wanna see any danger come to my family or any other people out here on the beach," said Taylor.

The Coast Guard urged people to check the weather conditions before heading to the beach.
