MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee's Health Department has taken a more aggressive approach to fight crime.

Instead of vaccines, they're working to find new ways to prevent violence.

Reggie Moore is the new Director of Violence Prevention.

Just five months on the job, Moore has been tasked with finding ways to prevent assaults, shootings and murders.

He started by looking at what's worked in other parts of the country. One of them is to create "Safe Zones."

"Basically that involves hiring folks in the neighborhood to basically deescalate or intervene in conflicts," Moore said.

The hope is to expand it in 2017 and beyond.

Another initiative just started is called "Beyond The Bell."

It's brought more than 40 organizations in our area to work together to create more after school programs for students.
