RACINE -- Racine police charged a 55-year-old woman for child neglect after she left her 3-year-old grandson inside of a hot car while shopping.

Responders were called out to the Dollar Tree at 3925 Durand Ave. in the City of Racine on Friday, July 19th at around 6:18 p.m.

The complaint states crews had to break the window to gain access to the locked car.

The 3-year-old was limp and warm to the touch and was rushed to the emergency room.

At the emergency room, the child's grandmother, Sharon Hickman, showed up and started shouting at rescue staff for breaking her car window.

She told officers she was babysitting and went to the Dollar Tree with her grandson to buy some things.

When asked what she thought the temperature was at the time of the call, Hickmon said it was 80 degrees.

In reality, it was 91 degrees and an "excessive heat warning" was in effect for the area, according to the criminal complaint.
