MILWAUKEE -- While an 11-member task force mulled over numbers and financial options for the Mitchell Park Domes Wednesday night, on Thursday the focus centered on the celebration of their reopening.

County leaders cut a floral rope in honor of the Domes completed work Thursday morning.

It’s been a little over a month since that all three domes were open at the same time. The shut down came in February after a piece of concrete fell in the Desert dome.

Over the course of the year, steel mesh was installed at a cost of $500,000.

The longevity of the Mitchell Domes remains in question. A recent survey showed 49 percent of Residents want them rebuilt, while 44 percent of residents want to repair them.

"There's ways in which we can keep a lot of the great things that we got now. Expand and build on top, make it more energy efficient. This design is sucking a lot of money in terms of paying for the heat and electricity,” said State Rep. Josh Zepnick.

It is estimated that repairing the aging landmark would cost a little more than $65,000,000 to repair or replace.
