WISCONSIN — Governor Tony Evers has proclaimed June 12 as Women Veterans Day in Wisconsin.

In a proclamation signed by Governor Evers, it says in part 'Wisconsin is home to approximately 30,000 women veterans who deserved to recognized for their bravery and service.'

June 12 in particular was dedicated as Women Veterans Day in Wisconsin because the Women's Armed Services Integration Act was signed into law 71 years ago in 1948. It enabled women to serve in all branches of the military as permanent, regular members.

The proclamation also says 'despite their resilience and strength, women veterans face challenges within their battalions and must be treated equitably, fairly, and with the utmost respect.'
