Gas leak in Shorewood prompts evacuations

Posted

SHOREWOOD -- We Energies is investigating what caused a natural gas leak, in the same location of Shorewood for a third time in one week.

About two dozen frustrated families were evacuated out of their homes in a three block stretch of North Downer Avenue from East Edgewood to East Newton Avenue, after a construction crew accidentally broke into a natural gas line Monday afternoon.

A North Shore Fire captain tells us the construction worker who hit the line claimed the line was not properly marked. We Energies is looking into this claim.

"Very closely. When something like this happens, there is a very thorough procedure and an investigation that takes place," said Kathy Schulze, We Energies Spokesperson.

Families were allowed back in their homes Monday within about two hours of the leak.
