MILWAUKEE -- One of the most important missions of TODAY'S TMJ4 is making a difference in our community, and our Scripps Howard Foundation answers the call to help others through grants.
TODAY'S TMJ4 Anchor Shannon Sims surprised a woman who created an agency determined to end human trafficking with a $1,000 check.
The woman surprised was Nancy Yarbrough, executive director of Fresh Start Learning.
You may remember, when we rode along with her in February of this year. She fills donated purses with toiletries to build trust with women who feel they have nowhere else to turn.
The donation will help with her next mission, to get these women off the streets for a night.
"...and be able to have a 90-day program set up for them with legal healthcare and job readiness and housing," said Nancy Yarbrough, Fresh Start Learning Executive Director.
Women are also invited to an empowerment workshop at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. The event is for victims who have gone through trauma called "Live Past the Hurt." It is happening Tuesday at Fresh Start Learning at 4314 W. North Avenue in Milwaukee.
