RACINE COUNTY, Wis. — A freeway service truck driver died after a hit-and-run in Racine County on Friday morning.
The incident happened on I-94 northbound near 7 Mile Road forcing authorities to close two lanes of traffic for a couple of hours.
Wisconsin State Patrol, which is leading the investigation, said the suspected semi-truck and driver were found in Ripon.
Investigators say a freeway service truck stopped with his lights on to remove debris from the roadway. While he was out on the shoulder he was hit by a passing semi-tractor trailer. State Patrol says that semi took off.
"It’s tragic I cannot imagine how the family is feeling in this moment knowing their loved one is gone and whoever hit them couldn’t even stop. I think that is the worst," said Melissa.
Melissa's father owns Burgey's Pub and Prime which is just feet away from the crash scene. She says their security cameras caught what happened and she turned it over to investigators.
"There was a truck driver who had pulled over, stopped, to assist a turtle and was struck by a passing semi," said Melissa.
Authorities say the victim's name is not being released until family members are notified.
