The Department of Natural Resources says there is no such thing as safe ice, but the sportsmen who are out on Lake Winnebago say they have drilled down and found 18 inches of ice underneath them.
That means the Sturgeon Spectacular in Fond Du Lac will go on as planned this weekend. Fishermen were out setting up their shanties Friday.
"There is great ice here," said Mike Krolczyk, sturgeon fisherman.
The DNR sold over 12,000 licenses for sturgeon spearing, but not everyone is sure they will be there the full weekend with the weather set to warm up.
"Sunday could be questionable," said Krolczyk. "So we may pull off tomorrow."
There are some issues with the ice, and it's causing issues for kiteboarders and ice boaters who planned races for the weekend.
"We discovered that there's too many cracks, so we are going to set up a long distance course and we are going to stick to the south end of the lake," said Don Altmeyer, kiteboarder.
One crack on the lake runs for a few miles. There is open water around it, giving only a few safe areas people can cross. But the visitor's center says there is plenty of off-ice activities.
"See the Wisconsin State Snow Sculpting Competition. A lot of the sculptors will be out all night, all day," said Pete Wilke, the director of festivals for the Fond Du Lac Visitors Bureau.
