MILWAUKEE — The father of a Milwaukee 5-year-old shot and killed on Saturday is in custody, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales.

Morales announced the news at a press conference Monday afternoon. The father is in custody on drug charges and a charge of neglect causing harm, according to Detective Erik Gulbrandson.

Family members confirmed to TMJ4 News that the boy is Jamal Anderson Jr.

Investigators say it happened around 1:15 a.m. Saturday at the Mayfair Apartments near Lovers Lane and Silver Spring.

City leaders called for an end to gun violence the following afternoon. Alderman Bob Donovan stood with clergy leaders during that call.

“I just shook my head and was disgusted,” Donovan said.

Jamal's stepfather Giovonni Kelly sent us a statement that reads in part:

"Jamal Anderson was a kid like no other. He was a kid that brought light to anyone who came along his way. He was a kid that loves music, loves to dance. He loves to FaceTime his uncle, aunties, mommy and granny on his iPhone and would just hang up on you when he was done talking. Lol. He was so smart, having Down syndrome meant nothing. He was in the mix with anyone bigger than him. He tagged along. He loves to play wrestle with his cousin Jonnie and loves to be a big brother to his 1-year-old brother Amari. He will truly truly be missed. I came into his life when he was 2-years-old and being a step father was the best with him."

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back for updates.
