Family members and friends are remembering the two young children killed in an apartment fire Sunday morning.

The victims have been identified as 4-year-old Romeo Robinson and his 2-year-old sister Stephanie.

Firefighters were called to the scene near 91st Street and Brown Deer Road just after 5 am Sunday. When they arrived on scene the flames and smoke were very intense. The first responders were told there were children in the home, so they went in anyway.

"They articulated that to everyone else and said we’re going in but we’re not going to be able to last long. Those firefighters came out that door smoldering" said Assistant Fire Chief Aaron Lipski.

Investigators know the fire started in the kitchen but they can't be sure of much more at this point as the investigation is ongoing. Family members say there were working smoke detectors in the home but firefighters say they haven't found any.

The children's father was injured in the fire, along with two firefighters. The children's mother was in the hospital at the time of the fire with pregnancy complications according to family members.
