While hundreds wait in line to get Section 8 subsidized housing, one Milwaukee grandmother and her granddaughter show there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
The subsidized housing program allows preference for veterans and homeless people. So, when the Milwaukee County Housing Choice Voucher Program had openings for those preferences, they had no farther to look than across the parking lot.
Four-year-old Sophie Barker and her grandmother Melissa Jolitz call the Salvation Army home. That's where the employees at the Choice Voucher Program met them, driving into work each day.
"Sophie and Melissa will be sitting under the tree eating grapes," said program manager Dena Hunt. Hunt said they've connected with many organizations to distribute vouchers to people with the highest need.
It's been a thrill for Jolitz and Sophie, who have been homeless for a year.
"It's all she's talked about for the last two weeks," said Jolitz.
The pair hope to be in their new home by August.
