Families in need get free Thanksgiving dinners

Posted

Many people are busy planning for Thanksgiving. But for some local families, a turkey dinner with all the fixings is a luxury they can't afford.

Thanks to the help of local volunteers, more than 500 people in need got free Thanksgiving meal baskets Wednesday.

"It's going to help me out a lot," adds Michelle Barone. "I'm looking for work, and have a son to provide for. We're really struggling right now. A lot of people are."

"It means a lot to me," says Dorothy Booker. "I was recently laid off from my job after 19 years. It's a blessing to have this help. It shows even in difficult times, there are still people out there that care."

State Senator Lena Taylor organized the event at St. Gabriel's Church of God in Christ, with the help of local businesses and organizations.
