MADISON, Wis. - Business owners have been reporting a spike in threatening phone calls about their utility accounts from imposters claiming to represent We Energies, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Officials said scammers are calling small businesses and threatening them with disconnection of services unless an immediate payment is made.
Most of the recent reports to DATCP have been about contacts from fake We Energies representatives. This type of scam is common and scammers have been to known to claim to work for whatever utility company services are in the area they are targeting, according to the release.
Officials suggest calling your utility provider if you receive a similar threatening call to inquire about your account. They also suggest reporting the call online, by emailing datcphotline@wisconsin.gov or by calling the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-422-7128.
