MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Tony Evers has directed Attorney General Josh Kaul to withdraw Wisconsin from a lawsuit seeking repeal of the federal health care law.

That order Tuesday appears to fly in the face of a law passed in last month's lame-duck session requiring legislative approval to withdraw.

Evers announced in his State of the State speech that he made the directive to Kaul. He did not say why he thinks he has the authority to make such an order given the law change.

Evers campaigned on the promise to withdraw Wisconsin from the multi-state lawsuit seeking repeal of the Affordable Care Act. But after his win, Republicans met in a special session and appeared to block his ability to do that.
